How to choose the best internet for rural areas

Here is how to decide how much internet you need. The first thing that you need to answer is, what do you want to do with the internet ? It offers a plethora of activities, each more exciting than the other.

And as we say, times are a-changin' and everything is moving online.

Be it online shopping, connecting with loved ones (voice calls, video calls, emails) watching the latest news from across the world and accessing a whole new world of entertainment (think all the songs in the world, Movies and TV series from Netflix, the latest videos on Youtube) and playing online games.

Step One: Find out how much data you would need !

If you are only going to use only emails and web browsing, and would prefer to have a limit on how much data you would be consuming, you can start with a basic plan.

for example, in our region of Erin, Grand Valley, Caledon and Halton hills, Xplornet offers plans starting $39.99 per month.

These plans are fixed in speed and data consumption, ensuring that you do not run a massive bill for the internet each month.

For most families of up to 2 internet users a 100 GB (gigabites, a unit for measuring data) is sufficient.

If you have a larger number of people who are going to use the internet, OR if you are a heavy user who likes watching movies or streaming video content in general, it might be prudent to get an unlimited data plan.

Step Two : Find out how much speed you would need !

Every action you take on the internet would involve an exchange of data packets between your device (phone, tablet, laptop, computer etc.) and the service provider. The speed at which this happens is measured in MBPS (mega bites per second). How much Internet speed you need depends on a variety of factors, from how many people are sharing the WiFi to how much Netflix you watch.

Here are some general download speed requirements based on everyday online activities:

Check email and browse the web: 1-5 Mbps

Voice Calls, Streaming Music: 5-10 Mbps

Stream HD video content: 15-25 Mbps

Stream 4K content and play competitive online games: >40 Mbps

What Is the Difference Between Upload and Download Speed? To put it simply:

Download speed: how quickly your Internet connection can retrieve data from the Internet (web pages, video, cat photos, etc.)

Upload speed: how quickly your Internet connection can send data from your devices up to the Internet (uploading video to YouTube, sending documents via email, etc.)

Download speed is much more important for the average user, since you only notice upload speed when trying to share large files. It is normal for your upload speed to be around one tenth your download speed.

How Many Mbps Do I Need for Streaming?

Netflix recommends at least a 5 Mbps download speed for standard HD video, and a 25 Mbps download speed for 4K content.

Step 3: Find out the best internet service provider

Once you have an idea of the plan you need (for example 100 GB on a 10 Mbps) you need to find a service provider to do that for you. This is easier for urban areas where you have multiple options and wired/ cable connections, but for rural areas like ours we have to rely to cutting edge technologies of either fixed wireless internet OR satellite. <find out more about these here>

For example, in the regions of Erin, Caledon, Grand Valley, Ontario the best bet to go with Xplornet Communications that can give you plans starting from $39.99 a month and go all the way up to 25 Mbps speed plans with unlimited data.
